Trends in table setting
LESSON SUMMARY
Australians used to have very formal dinners. They would use fine bone china and crisp white linen. They would always eat in the dining room and finish with a cup of tea. They were elegant occasions and would consist of many courses. The table would start with all the tableware for the whole dinner, which would gradually get cleared away with each meal.
Now formal dinners have been simplified to fit in with our modern lives.
Women are no longer only housewives, and our busy modern lives and irregular schedules lend themselves to informal dinners. Sometimes families members will eat separately, or some eat in front of the TV or computer. Even the changes of house affect the way we eat - most houses no longer have a formal dining room.
Technogoly and social changes allow us an even larger selection of tableware. Most settings are dishwasher and microwave safe, and plastic is also common. Our settings also correspond with the cuisine we eat - for example, chopsticks for chinese food.
TASK 10: TRENDS IN TABLE SETTINGS
1. Do a google images search on 'Table setting'
2. Compile a slide show consisting of at least 5 different table settings. State in the caption the occasion and venue they would be suitable for.
