Catering involves the cooking of food. Food service involves the serving of food. Establishments of food service and catering have become prominent features in our society. There are more than 150 000 catering and food service ventures that make up Australia's hospitality industry. Catering establishments are any type of business or venture that provides the service of food. Each catering business provides a service to meet the needs of certain customers. These establishments include things such as milk bars, restaurants or home delivery services. Customers have a large amount of choices with both formal and informal services.
TYPES OF CATERING ESTABLISHMENTS
Most food service ventures can fall into the categories of commercial and non-commercial. Most of them also operate to make a profit, but some however operate to support people in need and provide an important community service.
COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS
Commercial establishments provide services to customers in exchange for money. They have an established business which operates for a profit.

Non-commercial establishments operate as support to a client, and they do not make a profit, or if they do make a profit all money will be contributed to the continual operation of the establishment.
